What is internet marketing?
Internet marketing, also referred to as i?marketing, web marketing, online marketing, or eMarketing, is the marketing of products or services over the Internet.

Internet marketing ties together creative and technical aspects of the Internet, including design, development, advertising, and sales.

A lot of companies are doing their sales and marketing online and people are spending millions of dollars online to make purchases. As an internet marketer, you can participate in the online marketing chain either by selling your products online or promoting other peoples products and being paid online

You can even purchase complete products and resell them as your own!

To resell other peoples products, you need to register as an affiliate (reseller) with them. Once they approve you to become a reseller, you will be able to promote these products online to other people and you will get paid every time the product is purchased! Some products will even compensate you upto 75% per sale for every product sold. You will even find products or services which will be billing the customer on a monthly basis and you will get paid every month the client is billed!

Where can you find products to promote?

There are numerous websites that host a lot of products that you can resell as an affiliate. A few of these include:

1. www.clickbank.com : Clickbank currently does not allow you to resell its products if you are located in Kenya
2. www.paydotcom.com Paydotcom is an alternative to click bank.  You will find a lot of products here and you can select the ones that interest you and promote them online.
3.www.shareasale.com
4. www.cj.com
5. Many other individual websites run their own affiliate programs which enable you to register as an affiliate and earn for giving them leads or by earning a sale. An example is www.amazon.com

Internet marketing vs. affiliate marketing?

Internet marketing is the ‘whole shebang’ of marketing products on the web. This includes:
1. Product development
2. Website management, domain registration and hosting
3. Website promotion and search engine marketing
4. Affiliates management
5. Product launch and product marketing/promotion
6. Website content generation
7. Traffic generation
8. Online PR and reputation management

Affiliate marketing is just a component of internet marketing. This is just the promotion of other people’s products.
How can I learn online marketing?

The internet is a good resource for learning online marketing. However, the biggest problem you will find is information overload, which will be a bit confusing for you at first but also you will find this to be quite a challenge to learn or what to select as the right resource to learn  with.

However, as you get started, I recommend that you have a look at the following resources.

Is online marketing for me?

Online marketing is good for you if:

1. You need to make an extra income on the side, without leaving your full time job
2. You are looking to earn passive income when you are not working
3. You understand the potential represented by the fiber cable which will bring down the cost of having internet at home almost for everyone in Nairobi and later the rest of the country- What will you do with internet at your house? Make money? Update your facebook status? Read news?
4. You would like to reduce your reliance on a monthly paycheck which hardly makes ends meet. “You usually have a lot of month left at the end of the money (after you pay your bills from your salary)!”
5. If you want to make a lot of money by leveraging on the power of the internet!

How do people make money online?

A lot of people are making a living online and you can be part of this group. Which business in Kenya at the moment can give you 20,000 shillings a day with say 4 hours of work? What about USD 20,000 a day? Unless you have a factory in industrial area, or maybe you own a fleet of matatus/buses. But with that you would have to contend with staff management, large initial capital outlays, terror gangs (We know them!) and many other issues.

People make money online by:

1. Promoting other peoples products and being paid(Affiliate Marketing)

• Per sale
• Per lead(Per every person they bring over to the sellers website!!!)

2. Selling  physical products on websites like www.ebay.com

3. Providing services eg writing, editing, web design, search engine promotion, accounting, IT support, administrative support etc . I am proof of this. 4. Traffic arbitrage. This is where you sell buy paid advertising eg from google adwords(www.adwords.com ) and then drive traffic to your affiliate links, with a strategy to make more money than you are spending. This is a hard one for starters but once you get the hang of it and invest money, the results can be shockingly positive!
5. Training other people on a particular subject.This is usually done through webinars,online workshops and membership websites

6. Spamming! I wont talk about this since I don’t recommend it

7. Stealing other people’s credit cards! Lets not go there either

How Can I get started with online marketing?

Its very easy to get started with online marketing. However, its not simple! Let me explain

A good analogy would suffice here:

Assume you are given Kshs 1000 to go to the city market by your mother. Your mother just gives you Kshs 1000 and says you proceed to the city market and come back with ingredients for lunch.

You find your way into the city market. That’s the easy part

Once you are inside, you meet all kinds of traders. Fish mongers, vegetable sellers, airtime vendors, flower arrangers, meat roasters, hustlers, council workers! Duh!

The people selling the fish start explaining to you on how fresh their fish is and telling you how much it is per kg. The guys selling the pork are waving at you, waving a machete and asking you which part you like, the lady selling the chicken shrieks ‘karibu customer’(Oops, I almost said, karibu member!).

You are dazed!

Suddenly, you decide, why don’t you first make a round through the whole market to see what is available before you make your decision.

Off you go, shrugging off the insistent ‘chicken girl’ and you come to a ‘clearing’ full of roast meat. Even before they find out if you are vegetarian or not, they start cutting small pieces of meat for you to taste, while at the same time wiping their brows with the back of their hands. You ‘unwillingly’ eat a few pieces of meat from various vendors, proceeding on and then you find yourself at the fruits section. Many ladies, their arms akimbo, (what a semblance to your mother?),  are waving you into their fruit stalls.

At this point you remember you were supposed to buy lunch for the family, you hurry to the other side, only to stumble into some hapless tourists who are being bullied into buying a big giraffe curving which has been in the city market, even before your mother was born…..and you still have not bought your family lunch!!!!!!

What am I trying to say?

That its very easy to get started, but its hard to remain focused and get to see the results you see people claiming on the internet.
